Halo - Halo Quest in Chicago

Halo-halo is a favorite Filipino dessert. Its a mixture of shaved ice and evaporated milk with beans, jackfruit, plantains, nata de coco, purple yam, leche flan and ice cream. In a tall glass, the beans and fruits and nata de coco are placed first. Followed by shaved ice. Topped with purple yam or leche flan and ice cream. Then evaporated milk is poured over the mixture.
My sisters and I loved to enjoy this sweet filling every summer. But this is not limited to hot summer days. Halo-halo is available everyday and everywhere in the Philippines.

So here I am in Chicago. Always clamoring to try new Filipino restaurants in the area. Not necessarily new to open but new to me.
So far, Ruby's Fastfood in Irving Park have the best halo-halo in town. I love the beans they added. There is jackfruit and plantain which are unusually fresh in this side of the globe. Plus the yema brings it all together. My husband felt bad there was no ice cream added but they made a good purple yam.

Now if that place is not too far to drive from where I actually live, I will be having me a halo-halo almost everyday.
